Objective: I will identify and describe literary elements from a chosen novel by completing three novel activities regarding the novel's protagonist, themes, tone and mood.
Directions: Select and complete one activity from each bullet list (3 activities total, 20 points each) to help you and others think about your novel. Remember to create products that are: Insightful, rich with detail, accurate and vivid in imagery
Protagonist/Foil
- Write a bio-poem about the protagonist and antagonist of the novel of your choice so your readers can see how the two characters are different. Be sure to include the most important traits in each poem.
- Write a newspaper article about the foil and/or the protagonist. The date of the articles is 20 years after the time in the story. Where has life taken this character? Why? Make sure the piece is an interesting, feature-type article. Newspaper Template for Word
- Write and illustrate a full and useful profile of the protagonist or of the foil. Be sure to create enough details that the reader can fully visualize each character.
- Create your own project. MUST be approved by teacher before you begin work.
Theme(s)
- Find a famous person in history or current events whose experiences and life reflect the essential themes of your novel.Write a 1 page essay, double-spaced, Times New Roman 12 pt font to demonstrate how the life of the person you chose reflects the essential themes of your novel.
- Create a multimedia presentation that fully explores a key theme from the novel. Use at least 2-3 media (for example: music, painting, poetry, sculpture, photography, and calligraphy, collage) in your exploration. Draw at least two comparisons or contrasts between themes in the novel and in your life.
- Find several songs you think reflect an important message from the book. Prepare an audio collage. Write an accompanying card that helps listeners understand why and how you think the songs express the books meaning.
- Create your own project. MUST be approved by teacher before you begin work.
- Find or create works of quality art to demonstrate the tone of your novel and several examples to demonstrate the various moods portrayed in your novel.
- Write a letter to a friend discussing the overall tone of the book and why you liked/disliked it. Also discuss how the author portrayed the moods of scenes and or/characters.
- Re-write an important event from the novel in comic strip form...be sure to exhibit the tone and mood of the scene in the writing and drawing of the cartoon.
