Argumentative Essay 1 Building an Argument

Argument: Do you believe the new nutrition standards will be effective in the fight against obesity?

Writing Objective: I will write arguments to support claims in an analysis of a substantive text using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence by a close reading of the article "Unhappy Meals" and writing an essay arguing for or against the article's claims.
Today's Assignment: Use the "Building an Argument" graphic organizer to record your claim, evidence, reasons, counter arguments and weaknesses in counterarguments. When you have finished, you may begin your essay. 

Essay Requirements

  1. Must be typed in a classic 12 pt. font (Times New Roman, Arial, Century).
  2. Double spaced, 1" margin all around.
  3. At the top left of the page please put your name, date, the name of this class (Library Information Science) and the title: Argumentative Essay 1.
  4. Introduction and conclusion, both stating the claim or position you are taking.
  5. The body of the essay should include your reasons and evidence, and at least one counter argument.
  6. Please use the following argument template in your essay: "In the article, he says that __________. I tend to agree/disagree because __________. (This will fulfill the requirement for at least one counter argument.)
  7. A minimum of 3 well-written paragraphs (Introduction, body, conclusion).

Today's Assignment: You will reread the article "Unhappy Meals" by Jay Newton Small. While rereading, highlight the claims/evidence of both sides of the issue, a different color for each side. When you have finished rereading the article and highlighting the claim/counterclaim and evidence, organize the information you've gathered into the graphic organizer provided. Turn the graphic organizer into Mrs. Rennau today. 15 POINTS DUE TODAY

1. Read the Time Magazine article "Unhappy Meals" by Jay Newton-Small. As you are reading, circle any words you do not know or are unsure of. Reply to this blog listing at least 3 words you circled and a brief definition of each. Make sure your definition fits the word as it is used in the article. DUE FRIDAY SEPT 11 (10 POINTS)
